Sharpening Our Spirits

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

“Mental sharpness comes from being around good people. And a meeting of minds can help people see their ideas with new clarity, refine them, and shape them into brilliant insights. This requires discussion partners who can challenge one another and stimulate thought-people who know how to attack the thought and not the thinker. Two friends who bring their ideas together can help each other become sharper.” (NIV Commentary on Proverbs 27:17
Those who speak words of wisdom and have instructed others well did not come to this place from their own understanding. They sought out knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Their lives exemplify the proverb “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16
They have experienced life and its trials fully aware of the source of wisdom comes from “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)
They have considered the counsel of their peers, studied the words of mentors, and sought God’s guidance for their own lives. They carefully choose their words as they know “the one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.” (Proverbs 17:27).
They understand that to be at peace with their principles and beliefs is better than to follow the waywardness of the simple as “the complacency of fools will destroy them.” (Proverbs 1:32).
My friends, when I think of wisdom and understanding I am thankful that God has blessed us with His counsel through His word and His Holy Spirit. I am so thankful for the wisdom and counsel of mentors, friends (encouragers), and those God has placed in my path to keep my steps from being hampered. Each of you have played a significant role in my life and I pray that you realize how significant you are to God and those He has placed in your lives.
So let us seek wisdom as if it were gold, let us attack the thought and not the thinker, and let us surround ourselves with wise counsel so our plans may succeed as we lean not on our “own understanding but in all our ways submit to Him and He will make our paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:6 paraphrase)
God Bless you all,
